MOSQUITOFISH MINNOWS (Gambusia) INFORMATION PAGE
Mosquitofish Minnows (Gambusia) are a great addition to your pond if you struggle with Mosquitos. They can be put into Stock Tanks and ditches and waterways that hold Mosquito breeding areas. They are tolerant of low quality water and stagnant water areas.
Each female will eat hundreds of Mosquito larvae a day – times each female. In studies, one female has been observed to consume between 40% and 160% of her own body weight. They eat other types of larvae, zooplankton and insects as well, but you can see the benefit of adding them to your pond or lake as a Feeder Fish and a way to combat Mosquitos.
Females produce live young as they swim, so they set up a breeding population easier. If they have a place to get away from predators they can reproduce well for you.
Mosquitofish Minnows are smaller than Fathead Minnows, with the female reaching about 2-3/4″ in length. You can stock Fathead Minnows along with Mosquitofish Minnows without a problem in a pond. Both are great as Feeder Fish, and most fish want to eat them. Baby Bass need Minnows when their mouth size is smaller than available Bluegill in the pond.
Females reproduce 2 to 6 times a Season, depending on water temperature, with a 16 to 28 day gestation period.
