SOUTHERN SPECKLEBELLY SUNFISH - Hybrid Bream Information Page
The Southern Specklebelly Sunfish is a brand new Hybrid Bluegill/Bream with many desirable features. It takes to pelleted food readily, it will grow to a large size and is easy to catch and tastes great.
J.M. Malone and Son, Inc. is the only Fish Hatchery that produces these fish, and we are happy to be offering it to our customers.
The regular “Hybrid Bream” is a combination of a Coppernose Bluegill and a Green Sunfish. When it spawns unfortunately the offspring can be an undesirable Green Sunfish.
The new Southern Specklebelly Sunfish does not breakdown into an undesirable fish. It also does not reproduce well, because it produces 95% to 100% male offspring. Because of this you don’t have to worry about them overpopulating your pond or lake. They are a good addition to a Catfish Pond, or if you want a Bream Pond without stocking Bass to keep the regular spawning Bluegill in check.
Here are basic quantity recommendations per acre:
100-200 to the acre in a traditional Bass Pond (they do not take the place of the Bluegill needed to feed your Bass)
200-500 to the acre in a Catfish Pond
100 to 1000 to the acre in a Hybrid Bream Pond
When you fish for them do not take the largest males. Young Hybrid Bluegill are putting their growth into body size, not reproduction, so allowing large males to survive lets them eat the smaller fish, thereby increasing their growth rate.
You should consider stocking 1000 to 2000 Fathead Minnows to the acre when you stock Specklebellys. They need the Minnows for food unless you have a well established pond or unless you supplement daily with feed.
